Sacroiliac Joint Injections
Sacroiliac Joint Injections
A sacroiliac joint injection, which is also known as a sacroiliac joint block, is mostly used to diagnose or treat a patient’s low back pain and/or symptoms of sciatica normally associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
The sacroiliac joints are adjacent to the spine and bring together the sacrum with the hip on both sides. We have two sacroiliac joints, one on either side of the spine. Dysfunction or joint inflammation in the area can cause pain.
There are two purposes of a sacroiliac joint injection. The first is to diagnose the pain source, and also to provide therapeutic pain relief. On occasion, these two injections are done separately and a patient will receive a purely diagnostic or therapeutic injection. However, these injections are often combined into one injection.
